School Council

Lynch Hill School, really values the importance of the Pupil Voice. That means pupils have opportunities to share their opinions and ideas with teachers, senior staff, governors and the canteen. Many visitors that come to the school have meetings with the School Council. In the past the School Council has met with the Mayor, Council Officials, OFSTED and interviewed new teachers applying for jobs at Lynch Hill! Obviously, the school council take their role very seriously. The school recognises our importance too because we have our own photo board, so pupils and staff know who we are!

In addition to meeting people, we help improve the facilities offered to pupils at school. Our main two areas of work, are in the canteen and playground. The school council, works with Mrs Hunt, our chef, to help improve the selection of food on offer in the canteen. We understand the need for healthy meals, and we try to link the choices available to what pupils really like. Also, we have requested different size tables for Year 6 pupils and new bins to put our rubbish in, these ideas were agreed and now we have a few larger tables to sit at and new yellow bins!

As pupils, we spend lots of time in the playground, and it is really important that we have activities available to keep us interested. Last year, the school council raised money through Discos and non-uniform days. This meant we were able to buy a Pavilion – it looks great! Now, we are planning to establish an area for dance club rehearsals and quiet reading during our Lunch Breaks. In the summer, it is likely to become an outside classroom too, because everybody is keen to study in the warm, welcoming environment. We have also been able to purchase equipment for Key Stage 1 and Foundation stage too.

This year our main focus has been looking at the Unicef Convention on the Rights of the Child. We are using the theme of rights and responsibliites to design a lunchtime charter so that everyone has a successful lunchtime.

We understand that when we have rights we also have the responsbility to give other children their rights. Therefore we have been raising lots of money for the charity GO MAD in Tanzania. This money will be used to help build water tanks providing children with clean water. If we raise enough we might even help to build a school so that the children can have their right to an education. We have raised the money by organising discos, non - uniform days, raffles, cake sales and a talent show.

As well as raising money for Go MAD, we have also raised money for Red Nose Day and the victims of the earthquake and Tsunami in Japan.
